From their sunny design studio in Newport Beach, the Sharp family and Lucy Love crew, take time to mix work, family and play. A killer week around the office is filled with the phones buzzing with reorder requests, developing the new “IT” item and spending time with favorite buyers and store owners. “The perfect Friday,” says president, Michael Sharp, “ is a company BBQ and a beach session at Newport’s 56th street.”
As Lucy Love approaches their ten-year anniversary, this built “by girls, for girls” brand is pushing a new frontier. The organically grown family business, founded by OC natives, Holly and Michael Sharp, have positioned the label into one of the top four woman surf brands in every core and specialty shop in the market. Coming off last year’s 40% growth, the owners attribute the success to their strong commitment to develop products that sell at retail and the immediate ability to respond to top-selling products.
It is no surprise that the Sharp’s have built this company to last decades. This team has been manufacturing since the early 1980’s when they started their first label, Holly Sharp. Throughout the eighties, the designers earned such awards as California Designer of the year and were featured in the Absolute Vodka Campaigns. The Holly Sharp label was found in such high-end retailers as Henri Bendal, Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s. After ten years of success in high-end fashion, the couple began their family in Newport Beach and decided to approach the evolving action sports market.
In the mid 1990’s, Holly and Michael partnered with Gotcha International to create woman’s label, GirlStar. It was an instant success that blended Holly’s fun, whimsical take on fashion with Gotha’s twenty-year-old surf roots. This project introduced the Sharp’s to the multi-product license opportunities and the growing global markets of the action sports.
